Damien Quick | Photography Biography
An artist from an early age, photography first caught Damien’s eye in the early 90’s. Inspired by his father’s black & white landscape images, Damien soon received his first compact camera for his birthday at the age of 15. In 1996, Limited by the cameras lack of control, Damien then Purchased a second-hand manual SLR camera the same as his fathers. Fascinated by light at night and experimenting with long exposures, Damien soon realised photography more an artistic tool than simply just for documenting lives and events.
Also at this time using early photo editing software, Damien began creating entertaining images by editing downloaded magazine photos, blending people’s heads with bodies of opposite sex to amuse his friends.
Finger in every pie, Damien also had a keen interest in music, and began playing in bands and DJing around clubs and venues from Brisbane to Melbourne. In 1999 under the alias “Monkwhy” & continuing Photography, he began to focus more on documenting live music gigs and performances using techniques used for experimental night imagery with the addition of a flash.
2003, Photography and Music soon led to an interest in short film, and with the purchase of a video camera, Damien began creating his own abstract films using photography, image editing & and music production skills. This blend of all skills dominated for the next few years, dabbling in 3D animation and effects, Lighting techniques and visual trickery, and in 2007 Damien joined the post production team at a Film post production house located at Warner Roadshow studios on the Gold Coast.
Learning at an accelerated rate, Damien was responsible for editing all promotional video projects for the company and the Gold Coast film industry, as well as photographing and manipulating full page magazine advertisements which were published in such magazines as ‘Encore’ & ‘Smoke & Mirrors’.
Quickly moving up in the Film Post Production / Animation industry, Damien was offered a management position at one of Brisbane’s leading Animation Studios. However being removed from the creative side of the industry and with very little inspiration, Photography once again began to take over all of Damien’s spare time and, with the purchase of his first Digital SLR once again became the sole creative outlet.
Now, after leaving the Film industry, and with renewed inspiration, Damien has his focus on music & creative photography. Combining his photography with artistic skills and film post production techniques within the music scene, covering live gigs, performances & events such as Woodford Folk Festival, Greenfest, The Dreaming Festival & other events around Queensland. Alongside live music & DJing, Damien now creates photographic art pieces for artists and musicians, and is expanding into producing commercial photography & photographic retouching for professional magazine model shoots and advertising.
